Worship AV: Rack Space and Cable Runs That Hold Up

Houses of worship still run into the same limits every retrofit hits. Aesthetics matter, but so does getting intelligible audio to the last row without new conduit or a bigger amp closet. Installers end up weighing what gear actually fits the existing infrastructure against what the congregation hears on Sunday.

Signal paths through old buildings Historic sanctuaries rarely have spare conduit. Pulling new runs for monitors and front fills often means working around stone or plaster that cannot be disturbed. One crew recently reused existing monitor lines and added only the wireless return path, keeping the pull cost down. That choice also reduced the number of new terminations the weekend volunteer team would ever touch. In one 1920s sanctuary the plaster ceiling hid two-inch conduit that was already 68 percent full. The integrator mapped every bend with a fish-tape and video probe before deciding which two pairs could carry AES3 instead of analog. The test showed acceptable jitter at 48 kHz once the runs stayed under 38 meters, so they kept the existing pulls and avoided opening the ceiling.

HDR** combiners let a church move twelve channels onto one external antenna. Rack space drops from six separate transmitters to a single 1RU unit, and the antenna count stays at one. The same combiner approach shows up when channel counts climb past eight and spare antenna locations are already taken. Worth testing the combiner on a spare machine first if the room has metal truss or balcony rails that can reflect RF. During one commissioning the crew set the combiner output at +4 dBu, then walked each receiver through the seating area with a 1 kHz tone at -10 dBFS. Two channels showed 12 dB drops behind the baptismal font; repositioning the single antenna two feet lower cleared the null without adding another antenna run.

Amplifiers feeding both new and old loudspeakers Connect Series 354 amplifiers were chosen to drive fresh monitors while keeping the existing mains on the same platform. One chassis handles both duties, so the integrator avoids a second model in the rack and the associated spare-parts inventory. The decision also simplified the DSP file set the house tech loads after service.

Lighting and audio on shared control

Aero moving heads and Stingray RGBW fixtures were added in the same project that brought in a d&b audiotechnik system for vocal clarity. Both systems land on the same network switch, which cut the number of control points the operator touches during a service. The shared network also means one cable path instead of separate runs for lighting and audio.

DSP settings that survive volunteer resets Most rooms lose their tuned presets within months when volunteers power-cycle the rack. One integrator locked the critical output gains and delay values behind a password on the DSP, then printed a one-page QR code that opens a read-only view of the current settings. The same code links to a cloud backup dated the day of final walkthrough.

Budget versus future channel growth Integrators keep returning to the same trade-off: buy what fits the current budget or leave headroom for more wireless and streaming inputs later. The projects that scale cleanly are the ones where the first rack layout already accounts for an extra combiner or DSP card two years out. - Verify conduit fill before committing to new wireless counts
