Corporate and university AV projects continue to specify Mac workstations for capture and playout because of their Thunderbolt I/O density and Final Cut compatibility. AJA KONA HDMI 3.0 cards remain common in these racks for single-link 4K60 and HDR passes through existing HDMI matrices. Since the Sonoma release, however, several integration houses have logged repeated failures at first boot when the card driver refuses to load.
Apple tightened its kernel-extension signing policy again with Sonoma. The AJA driver package, while notarized for Ventura, triggers a new entitlement check on the HDMI 3.0 firmware bridge. Technicians report that the card appears in System Information yet produces no input in software such as OBS, vMix, or AJA’s own Control Room utility. A common workaround involves booting into Recovery, disabling SIP, then re-enabling it after manual kext approval—an extra two hours per machine that adds up across a 12-seat control room.
Color space handling presents a second, quieter problem. The KONA HDMI 3.0 is supposed to read the AVI InfoFrame and set the correct matrix and range flags for Rec.709 or Rec.2020 sources. On Sonoma the driver sometimes forces Limited range on Full-range feeds, producing crushed blacks in downstream processors such as the Roland V-160HD or Evertz VIP. Integrators tracing the signal with an AJA HDR Image Analyzer confirm the metadata tag is present on the wire but stripped or rewritten inside the driver before it reaches the application buffer.

Install Schedules and Hardware Swaps
These two issues directly affect billable time. One mid-Atlantic systems firm budgeted three days for rack integration of four KONA HDMI 3.0 units into Mac Studio edit stations; the actual commissioning stretched to five days once driver signing and range mismatches were isolated. The extra labor cost exceeded the card price differential versus a Blackmagic DeckLink 8K Pro, prompting the client to request a change order. In fixed-install environments where the Mac is mounted inside a lectern or under a control desk, repeated reboots for testing also risk disturbing adjacent DSP and network gear already cabled.
Some teams have shifted to AJA’s own Io X3 or Corvid 44 12G cards that still use Thunderbolt bridging, avoiding the Sonoma kernel-extension path altogether. Others keep one older Intel Mac mini on Ventura solely for capture duties, then move files over 10 GbE. Both approaches increase rack depth and power draw, items that must be re-submitted to the electrical engineer when the ceiling grid is already closed.
Color-space tag errors are harder to mask. When a corporate client insists on HDR pass-through for a 2025 product-launch stream, the only reliable fix so far has been to insert an external HDMI 2.1 analyzer or LUT box ahead of the KONA input. That adds latency and another point of failure monitored by the NOC.
Looking ahead, integrators are watching whether Apple’s planned tightening of driver requirements in the next major macOS release will force AJA to ship a full user-space capture SDK or whether Thunderbolt-based appliances will simply replace PCIe cards in new Mac-based rooms. Several large design-build firms have already begun writing dual-spec line items into their 2025 templates so that either path can be priced without re-issuing an entire bid package.
Technicians working with Mac Studio units have found that forcing the KONA driver to load via a launch daemon script after login reduces the initial failure rate during rack power-up sequences. This script checks for the presence of the HDMI 3.0 bridge in IORegistry before applying a timed kextload command.
When verifying range flags, installers now route a known Full-range test pattern from a Blackmagic HyperDeck through the matrix to the KONA input, then monitor the output buffer in AJA Control Room set to 10-bit RGB. Any deviation from 0-1023 levels indicates the driver override in effect.
Power sequencing has also become critical; applying main AC to the Mac Studio before energizing the HDMI matrix prevents the firmware bridge from entering a hung state that requires a full system restart to clear.
